Monetization Rules
What makes a post or an account lose money. These are stricter than the rules for simply posting.
Six video formats that can never earn
Static videos, static image polls, slideshows, looping videos, text montages and videos with built-in ads are not monetizable.
Engagement bait
Offering a reward for likes, comments, shares or link clicks makes a post non-monetizable.
Paid stunts: asking for money to do extreme things
You can't ask for Stars, gifts or payment in exchange for extreme or risky behavior.
Misinformation
Content rated false by a fact-checker can't be monetized, and repeated false content can disqualify the account.
Misleading medical and health claims
Health claims that expert organizations have disproven, including anti-vaccine claims, are never eligible to earn.
Clickbait and sensational headlines
Clickbait and sensationalism can make your whole account ineligible, not just one post.
Original content: what counts as yours
You can only monetize content you made, helped make, or that features you. Anything borrowed needs a meaningful enhancement.
Edits that don't make content yours
Small changes to someone else's clip still count as unoriginal. Meta names ten of them.
The 90-day originality penalty
A limited-originality flag usually means 90 days without monetization, reduced reach and possibly withheld earnings.
Fake engagement, share groups and mass crossposting
Anything that artificially boosts followers, views or engagement to earn more can cost you monetization.
Debated social issues
Hot-button topics can earn, but inflammatory treatment drops you to 'very few advertisers', and profiting off the issue is blocked.
Tragedy and conflict
Death, injury, illness, abuse and disasters limit earnings, especially when the distressing moment is shown.
Objectionable activity, drugs and alcohol
Crime, substance use and dangerous acts limit earnings. Promoting the sale or misuse of drugs is blocked.
Sexual and suggestive content
Revealing outfits and romance can still earn. Highly sexual topics barely earn, and nudity or explicit poses are blocked.
Strong language
A few swear words keep most advertisers. Frequent profanity drops you to very few. Hateful language is restricted.
Gross, graphic and explicit content
Wounds, medical procedures, bodily fluids and gross-out content limit earnings. Shocking or excessively graphic content is blocked.
Advertiser-friendly ratings explained
Every piece of content gets a rating that decides how many advertisers will appear on it, from 'almost all' to 'blocked'.
How de-monetization works
A single reel can be de-monetized, and serious or repeated problems can take monetization away from the whole account.
How to appeal a monetization decision
You usually get one appeal per decision. Reviews typically take 7 days or less.
Giveaways and contests
Giveaways are allowed, but Meta's monetization rules ban physical prizes, paywalled entry and 'tag or share to enter' mechanics.
