The giveaway that backfired
To celebrate 20K followers, Tasha offered a $300 rug to anyone who liked, shared and tagged three friends.
What happened
Engagement exploded for a week. Then her post was marked as engagement bait, and a monetization warning showed up in Policy issues.
She also realized she had no official rules, no age or country limits, and nothing saying Facebook wasn't involved.
The rule behind it
Rewarding likes, shares or tags is engagement bait, and the monetization promotion guidelines also ban physical prizes and 'tag a friend' entry.
Getting paid by following the rules
- Run milestone thank-yous with virtual gifts or a free download instead of physical prizes.
- Ask entrants to answer a question in the comments, not share or tag.
- Publish official rules and the statement that Facebook doesn't sponsor or run the promotion.
A giveaway is a legal promotion first and a content idea second.
